It's All in the Wrists : Practice

This sequence will restore mobility in your hands, and begin to relieve shoulder pain.

You can sit in any position you like to do this.

As always, I don't live in your body, YOU DO. Please be mindful of what it is telling you, and avoid any position that causes you pain.

To get a sense of what's going on underneath your skin, read this.

Breathing through Grief

From my perspective, the prevalent emotion right now, in every community I am a part of, is grief.

There have been terrible, tragic losses.

Each one as painful as the next, in its own unique way.

And so, this week's "Work In" addresses that.

When we experience trauma, it's a shock to our system, and parts of us begin to shut down. Breath becomes shallow, the diaphragm ceases to be involved, and at that point, the emotional body also moves in to disharmony. There is a fair amount of research on this subject, and I'm not about to write you an essay.

Suffice it to say that connecting back in to your breath, and re-igniting the diaphragmatic breathing cycle is one way out of that hellish loop.

I use an exercise ball in these videos for both feedback and support. A large one is good if you have one on hand,  if you don't some clean, overstuffed couch pillows will work as well.

My original sequence was 17 minutes long, and provides an additional asana plus brief meditation at the end.

I created a second, abbreviated video that is just over 10 minutes, as often we don't allow ourselves the time we need to truly heal, and sometimes 10 minutes is all you have to give to yourself. So if that's you, then do this one instead, and save the longer one for when you've got the time.

Your grief is uniquely yours, however this emotion is shared.

You are not alone.

My mission is to create a world where people are happy in their bodies.
I believe that happier people will bring us closer to a world that exists in
peace.

About Last Night...

Well, if it's not going to be this weekend, at some point, you or someone you love will need this class.

I had fun researching this one, trying all of these various combinations of asana, breathing, aromatherapy and massage techniques.

I'd like to think I put together a " best of the best", along the lines of what I want to do if I am seriously hung over, and possibly suffering the effects of heavy dancing without proper stretching or footwear.

Deep breathing is good, slow movements are good. Twists are good to detox the system, but I don't like to force too much too fast...

Take it easy, sip water, and take breaks liberally.

You have a small "laundry list" for this class:

1 towel ( of at least hand towel size, if not bath towel)

Lavander or Peppermint aromatherapy oils ( if you have them, or any headache blend)

One chair. The kind you have available is great. Don't overthink this.

Class is 25 minutes. Because I'm assuming that if you're doing this, you're not doing much else at that time.

Drink water. Sip water. Take it easy.

Send your liver some love, and remember that this too, shall pass.

My mission is to create a world where people are happy in their bodies.
I believe that happier people will bring us closer to a world that exists in
peace.

Post Holiday Tune Up

Greetings All!

I took a break from the " Work Ins" between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as for most of us, the best laid fitness plans of Mice and Men tend to fall by the wayside during the holiday season.

But here we are, one family meal closer to 2017, and it comes time to look down, assess the landscape, and lay some New Years Resolutions.

This Work In isn't about to "shred" you.

It's designed to gently massage your digestive system, and unkink the various kinks that have most likely arisen social activities replacing the gym.

It's about 15 minutes total.

If you want to skip the breathing warmup and get right in to the workout, head in about 2.5 minutes.

(or just do the breathing anyhow. It's really good for you and makes everything else work so much better)

I wish you Merry Festivities and a Happy New Year!

Serenity Now!

This week, in the United States of America, we are celebrating Thanksgiving. If you don't live in this country, you may not be aware that for many Americans, this holiday is a bigger deal than Christmas. And so, I felt compelled to roll this week's #WednesdayWarmup and Sunday stretch in to one.

It can be a wonderful thing to get together with your community and eat a shared meal.

And sometimes, it can be a challenge.

So this week I created two different Work In's:

First, a 14 minute " Turkey Tune-Up" : A quick little workout to get your body moving and iron out the kinks, for when you simply can't get to the gym ( and you need it the most!).

It will fire up your core, stretch out the cramped muscles, and get your system pumping smoothly enough to sit down with 20 of your closest friends and eat a meal where the concept of food combining never saw the light of day, all while getting you back in the living room within 15 minutes to keep on catching up with your cousins.

Second, a 7 minute " Moving around the Meal" sequence, designed to facilitate digestion, while using the expanded volume around your midsection to enhance your stretching capacity.

By the way, this one can be done in bed.

Don't forget to take walks if you can, and remember that the quickest way back to your center is via your breath.

Breathe in, Work out

I created this 10 minute sequence to get people more in touch with HOW the abdominals work, when they're working correctly.

It's calming, as well as effective.

You can practice it all on it's own, or use it as a core warmup to inform the rest of your workout.

Triple Threat : Moving the three Diaphragms

If you have any experience with core movement at all, you are most likely familiar with the concept of the "Three Diaphragms".

For a phenomenal description of them, check out this video.

I created this somatic flow sequence to wake these three places up in the body, and help us to discover their beautifully intertwined relationship.

It's going to take you just over a half hour to go through the entire sequence. That includes watching the instructional video.

Make the time.

Your body will thank you.

Sole Train

The foundation of good posture involves what is translating your weight in to the earth.

If you're sitting, you'd better make sure that your ass is grounded ( and not too tight).

If you're lying down, pay attention to what has contact, and where are the spaces; you'll learn a lot.

And if you're standing or walking, well, it's your feet.

In many cases, humans don't use the entire sole of their foot, and that can cause problems not only in the foot, but in every joint higher than it ( so, basically, every joint in the body).

This short sequence gives you tools to re-align your feet, and makes your legs feel great while you're at it.

I'd also like to give a shoutout to Jenn Pilotti, whose insight in to my feet changed me forever. She also has a studio in the Barnyard, and often teaches workshops on the weekends. Check her out.
