Aja

This dress began in 2014, when I met the artist HanifWondir and I co-designed a collection where we sublimated his art on to fabric, and then turned it in to clothes. The Aja dress was always a favorite, and it didn't feel like she'd really hit fruition yet, so I immediately decided to include it in the ARTumnal collection.

The process of completion became clear about 10 days before the show, as I began to wonder how to further accent the organic, fauna nature of this dress and immediately had the image of the Oval coat cocooning over it's inverted lily shape, with a lining that would illuminate the hues of the dress's body.  Fortunately, I had exactly that, with just enough yardage of the skirt fabric to make a full length coat, and an Icy Teal taffeta for the inside.

Once enveloped by her single leaf, Aja became fully embodied. Aja is a patron of the forest and all the animals within it. She holds the secrets of botany, and is a master of potions and healing herbs. This human/plant incarnation of power was complete.
