The Stretch You Didn't Know You Needed

Sometimes, where we feel stiff isn’t where we need to stretch.

Because your muscle chains are connected, it is entirely possible that  a tightness in the Glutes is pulling on your lower back, for example. Or perhaps some misalignment further along the chain has caused another muscle to overwork and go in to spasm.

So it’s always a good idea to so some general stretches, as well as working on targeted areas when you’re trying to unwind your own internal tension.

One of my favorite “ all over stretches” is this supported twist. By propping your body up on some pillows and bolsters, what could have been an extreme rotation is gently distributed through your entire structure from ankle to skull. A small amount of focused breathing helps to mobilize the torso from within, and ultimately, you have leveraged the possibility of release throughout an entire muscular chain.
